Neisseria Gonorrhoeae: Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease and is caused due to the transmission of bacteria called Neisseria gonorrhoeae. This bacterium affects the region of the urethra, cervix in females. However, it can affect both men and women.   

Gonorrhea can affect any area of the body, but most commonly, it attacks the genital tract.   

Signs and symptoms in men  

• Feeling intense pain while urinating.  

• Secretion of pus-like substance from the penis 
• Swelling and sometimes pain in any testicles 

Signs and symptoms in women  

1. A gradual increase in vaginal discharge 

1. Painful urination  

1. Pain in the abdominal and pelvic region 

1. Bleeding in periods and after sexual intercourse 

Neisseria gonorrhea is the bacteria that is responsible for gonorrhea. It is transmitted from one individual to another at the time of sexual intercourse, including oral and vaginal intercourse.  

The following measures can be adopted to reduce the risk of transmission of gonorrhea:  

1. Use a condom- Always uses a condom at the time of sexual intercourse, whether vaginal or oral.   

1. Don’t change the partners- Try as much possible to limit the change of partners. If you keep on changing the partner, you are at a higher risk of getting infected.
