Osteopenia is a condition where your body has low bone density. It is an age phenomenon after you have passed your peak bone density age, which is around 35 years. The difference between Osteopenia and Osteoporosis is that bone loss is not as severe in osteoporosis as in Osteopenia. That means someone with Osteopenia is more likely to fracture a bone than someone with a normal bone density but is less likely to fracture a bone than someone with osteoporosis. Your bones continuously go through a process of construction and destruction. When the level of depletion of your bones is more, you are likely to have Osteopenia. Usually, Osteopenia hits a person when he is nearly 50 years old, but this can vary depending on the individual's bone health when he was younger. If your bones were very strong during your youth, then it is also possible that you will never develop this problem. Many other factors influence Osteopenia in individuals like family history, your gender (women are at higher risk), medical history (like eating disorders which weaken your bones), and unhealthy lifestyle. Cancer patients who had undergone chemotherapy in the past are also at high risk of this condition due to the effect of certain radiations.
